Abstract

The modern poster as we know it first appeared in the nineteenth century with the industrial boom and the need to publicise new products. On the other hand, the invention of a new method for printing, lithography, introduced colour printing multiplying its different uses and possibilities.
Throughout the years, posters have been used to advertise all types of products and services. In the twentieth century, during the First World War, posters became an instrument for propaganda frequently used in order to recruit soldiers and carry out health promotion campaigns.

Posters as we know them, since their first appearance during the second half of the nineteenth century, have fulfilled their mission to perfection as a social means of communication and broadcast. Furthermore, posters have acquired an educative role by providing images with meaning.

The concepts of posterism and propaganda are intimately linked. Both terms have become tools which are now frequently used by Health Education in order to promote healthy habits amongst the population.

Each of the following posters identify elements which intervene in the health/disease process, in order to develop habits which will allow the individuals to recognise health risks and adopt strategies of prevention and promotion.

Each poster is also a piece of art at the service of a particular ideology. Therefore, their message will always depend on prevailing health objectives and paradigms. However, both aesthetically and formally, the posters usually adapt to the latest currents and trends of their time, most of which were clearly represented and synthesised.

As an example, a number of posters will be presented all of which display themes of Health Education from 1924 to the present times.
