Un siglo en las creencias y prácticas populares acerca de la gestación y el alumbramiento en el bierzo alto (León, España)

Resumen

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue realizar un estudio de las creencias y prácticas populares que eran comunes durante el período del embarazo, parto y puerperio, y su evolución a lo largo del siglo XX, en la subcomarca del Bierzo Alto, provincia de León.
En primer lugar, y para conocer la realidad cultural de principios del siglo XX, se estudió la información alusiva al tema contenida principalmente en la obra "El Ciclo Vital en España. Encuesta del Ateneo de Madrid. 1901-1902". Y por lo que se refiere al estado de esa realidad a principios del siglo XXI, se aplicó una entrevista ad-hoc (semiestructurada basada en la ya referida del Ateneo) a una muestra formada por mujeres que han dado a luz, en los últimos tiempos, en la citada zona.
Este estudio sobre la "Antropología del embarazo y parto" nos aportó datos reveladores acerca de la evolución de las creencias y prácticas populares seguidas por las mujeres que vivían y viven en el Bierzo Alto durante el citado período, y ello partiendo del principio de que "la cultura tiene que estar presente en toda reflexión teórica sobre el cuidado" (Rohrbach-Viadas, 1997).

Abstract (The evolution of beliefs and popular practices related to the gestation and childbirth during the last century: an study for the "bierzo alto" county , León, Spain)

This work develops a study of the popular practices and beliefs related to the pregnancy, birth and post-birth periods. We focus on the case of the "Bierzo Alto" sub-county, León, and we study the evolution of these methods during the 20th century.
As a first step, and to the aim of exploring the customs and manners that prevailed at the beginning of the 20th century, we mainly base the research on the work "The Life-Cycle in Spain. A survey by the Ateneo of Madrid. 1901-1902". Additionally, and in order to know the current state of this topic, we carry out a public opinion poll. In this poll, we made ad-hoc interviews (which were semi-structured, and based on the aforementioned survey by the Ateneo) to a sample of women, who have recently given birth in the "Bierzo Alto" sub-county.
This anthropological analysis on pregnancy and birth provides a review of the evolution of the methods and beliefs about this issue, which women living in the "Bierzo Alto" county have practised during the specified period. Throughout this work we have based our research on the following premise: "we must regard culture in every theoretical reflection about health and care" (Rohrbach-Viadas, 1997).
