Resumen

El estigma asociado a las personas que padecen un trastorno mental influye en la atención que prestan los profesionales sanitarios a su salud física, teniendo en consecuencia, repercusiones graves. Objetivo: dar a conocer algunas consecuencias del estigma aplicado por estos profesionales en la atención a determinadas enfermedades físicas de los pacientes con diagnóstico de trastorno mental. Metodología: revisión bibliográfica de artículos publicados en distintas bases de datos entre el año 2003 y 2012. Resultados: Existen numerosos estudios acerca de la estigmatización que ejercen los profesionales sanitarios hacia los pacientes mentales, pero no se ha hallado un número significativo de aquellos que están centrados en el impacto de las actitudes negativas de tales profesionales durante el proceso terapéutico de las dolencias físicas de aquellos. Conclusión: Conviene investigar sobre cuestiones éticas de la atención sanitaria y el impacto real de los prejuicios de los profesionales de la salud, así como acerca de los factores que influyen en una atención diferenciada a quienes padecen trastornos mentales.

Abstract (Influence of stigma in the care of patients with mental disorders who suffer physical pain)

The stigma attached to people with a mental disorder has serious repercussions for the level of physical health care provided to them by health professionals. Aim: The aim of this study is to present some consequences of the stigma applied by professionals that treat physical illnesses of patients diagnosed with a mental disorder. Methodology: Literature review of articles published in various databases between 2003 and 2012. Results: There are numerous studies about the stigmatisation that health professionals exert towards mental health patients, but there are not a significant number that focus on the impact of such negative attitudes during the process of treating physical health ailments of those patients. Conclusion: It is worth investigating ethical issues in health care and the real impact of prejudices held by health professionals, as well as factors that influence a biased level of health care provided to people who suffer from mental disorders.
