ABSTRACT

Introduction: The pain is often conditioned by external factors such as mood, environment..., so that no pharmacological level can influence care from a view. Music has been shown to promote relaxation and recreation focus of pain, reducing anxiety and stress. Music therapy is a complementary therapy, which provides numerous benefits in patient perception to pain, is cheap and devoid of side effects.
Objective: Estimate the proportion of patients with acute pain perceived less pain if we add music therapy to drug treatment, compared with patients receiving only drug therapy.
Methodology: We developed an analytical descriptive study in 2 groups of patients attending an emergency department for acute pain. On a sample of 244 subjects they were studied music therapy variable (independent variable) and the variable degree of pain (dependent variable).
Results: To study the association between the two variables and music therapy degree of pain (after treatment), with Chi Square (X2) X2 = 10.51, with 1 degree of freedom, so we can reject the null hypothesis with a significance level of 90%, 95% and 99%. Therefore, we can say that there is a probability> 99% (p <0.005) that there is association between the two variables. If we apply Yates correction: X2 = 9.61, with 1 degree of freedom, so we can reject the null hypothesis with a significance level of 90%, 95% and 99%. Therefore, we can say that there is a probability> 99% (p <0.005) that there is association between the two variables. The results confirm us the association between music therapy variable and the degree of pain after treatment.
Discussion/Conclusions: The psychological component of pain threshold in many cases is subject to the emotional state of the patient, music therapy, we get a positive effect in controlling this.
