La OMS y UNICEF recomiendan la lactancia materna exclusiva como el alimento ideal para los lactantes durante los 6 primeros meses, y después, conjuntamente con otros alimentos hasta los dos años de edad o más, por sus múltiples beneficios para la salud materno-infantil. Se ha demostrado que la lactancia materna disminuye el riesgo de padecer enfermedades infecciosas y crónicas, además de favorecer el desarrollo cognitivo durante la infancia. A nivel materno produce una pérdida de peso más rápida tras el parto, disminución del sangrado, fractura de cadera en la postmenopausia, cáncer de ovario y de mama.
