ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to assess the physical health problems among the elderly population and to find out the association of health problems with selected socio- demographic variables.
Methods and materials: A descriptive, cross-sectional study design was adopted. A total of 100 elderly people of Ward No. 19 of Dharan meeting the eligibility criteria were included as the samples. Systematic sampling technique was chosen for selection of the samples. Data was collected by using self-developed tool. Pre-test of the instrument was done in Ward No. 18 of Dharan with 10 samples. Data was analyzed by using appropriate descriptive (percentage and frequency) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test).
Results: This study showed that Hypertension (30%) was the most common diagnosed problem followed by Gastric problems (21%), Cataract (15%), Diabetes (13%), COPD (11%), Gout (11%) and Heart Disease (11%). Regarding the other problems either perceived by the subjects or identified by the investigators, diminished vision (89%), backache (76%), joint pain (60%), high BP (50%), insomnia (43%), frequent headache (34%), hemi/ quadriparesis (30%), hearing impairment (28%), itchy skin (28%) and abdominal pain (25%) were the most common problems identified. The study revealed that there was significant association of hypertension with gender (P<0.05), and education (P<0.05). There was also significant association between diabetes and education (<0.05) and gastric problems with education (P<0.05) and occupation (P<0.05). Hypertension was seen to be diagnosed more among males than females. The diagnosis of hypertension, diabetes and gastric problems was seen more among the literates. However, there was no association of remaining diagnosed health problems with other variables.
Conclusion: Major health problems were identified among the elderly in this geographical area of Dharan municipality. Therefore, the preventive measures as well as early diagnosis and treatment procedures should be carried out to improve the quality of life of the aged.
