ABSTRACT

A number of different intervention programmes have been described in the literature for caregivers of people with dementia, but the nature of intervention has varied widely.
The aim of this study was to develop psychosocial intervention for family caregivers, to evaluate it´s efficacy on the caregiver´s level of burden, and time to nursing home placement of persons with dementia.
A case-control intervention study with five-year follow up of 308 family caregivers to persons with dementia:153 caregiver who underwent intervention and 155 control caregivers who did not. Repeated measures were carried out every six months up to five years. Outcomes were measured using Caregiver burden scale, and all patients were diagnosed according to DSM-IV dementia criteria.
Caregivers who underwent the psychosocial intervention (five week programme and three months conversation group) reported significantly lower strain and disappointment after six months, and this trend remained after 12 months. There were significant delay in nursing home placement in the intervention group compared with control group at follow-up for almost two third of a year especially among adult children and female caregivers. The proportional hazards regression showed that caregivers burden was a major predictor for nursing home placement (OR=1.6, p <0.001). Other factors were severity of disease and relationship.
This study demonstrates that psychosocial intervention have significant effects on burden for caregivers of people with dementia, and help people with dementia stay at home longer.
