ABSTRACT

Zoonoses are disease with great impact at the Public Health level and serious social and economic repercussions. Many zoonoses can lead to death, but when precociously detected can be controlled and prevented new cases. Regions where there is a bigger prevalence of these diseases are regions where the rural component is more accentuated, also the emigrant populations afflux to there regions is a new reality in Portugal. Studies point out that the rise of salmonellosis is due to new food patterns of the Portuguese people.
Goals:
- characterize zoonoses with bigger incidence in Portugal.
- define intervention strategies in Public Health Nursing, contributing to the promotion of adequate behaviours and attitudes.
Methodology: Descriptive epidemiological study of documental base, having as analysis base the zoonoses distribution of compulsive declaration, in the quinquennium 2000-2005.
Studys variables: zoonoses (brucellosis, leptospirosis, nodular scarus fever and other salmonellosis); age, gender and region.
Results/conclusions: In Portugal brucellosis is the most prevalent zoonosis, having being decreasing systematically, nevertheless it was verified a rise in its incidence in 2005, from the four zoonoses leptospirosis is the one which presents smaller incidence, however as oscillated between 45 notifications (in 2000) and 32 notifications in 2005, males has been the most hit gender from the age group 55-64, in the country predominant notifications are from the Central Region and Autonomous Region of the Azores. Notifications related to nodular scarus fever decreased in a general way, (786 cases in 2000 and 396 cases in 2005). Salmonellosis have been rising, (2005 - 513 cases in 2000 - 309 cases). A high number of zoonoses cases is not declared to authorities, either for lack of elucidation of the population either for undervaluing by health professionals.
The development of integrated education programs for health directed to the population in general, are a priority, with special importance for the risk groups.
