Resumen

El Ateneo de Madrid quizá fue la institución sociocultural más importante de España durante los siglos XIX y XX. Entre los trabajos desde él promovidos encontramos una Encuesta realizada en 1901, en toda la geografía rural española, con la que se pretendía confeccionar un amplio fichero en el campo de las costumbres populares sobre el nacimiento, el matrimonio y la muerte. Un documento de gran valor etnográfico, que permite actualmente estudiar cuáles eran los modos de vida, creencias, ritos mágico-religiosos y de medicina popular con que los españoles de entonces abordaban los tres hechos más importantes del ciclo vital. Tomando como base las respuestas relativas a la muerte, el objeto de este artículo es rescatar y divulgar cómo se vivía en la comarca del Bierzo (León) este estadio final de la vida.

Abstract (Practices and beliefs related to death: an study for the bierzo county (León, Spain), based on the survey of the Ateneo of 1901)

The Ateneo of Madrid may have been the most relevant socio-cultural institution  in Spain in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1901, this institution carried out a public opinion poll throughout the entire Spanish territory. The aim of this survey was to collect data on the popular customs and manners regarding birth, wedding and death in the rural areas. This study conveys an important ethnographic value. Particularly, it allows us to understand the way of living, beliefs, magical-religious ceremonies, and natural medicine practices used by the Spanish population when tackling the three most important facts of the life-cycle. We base our research on the data regarding the death step. Thus, the objective of this work is to make up and to disclose how the inhabitants of the Bierzo county (León) dealt with this last stage of the life.
