Abstract (Hypothermia in trauma victims cared for in a Surgical Center)

In view of the magnitude of this problem and the different rewarming methods and techniques available, this study aimed to investigate the best nursing practice to achieve temperature normalization of trauma patients who are sent for anesthetic-surgical procedure. Articles were selected on the Internet, where the following databases were used: PUBMED, EMBASE, BIREME (BDENF and LILACS). Criteria for inclusion of articles were those completely available in English or Portuguese, between 1998 and 2008, regardless of the methodology used, and which showed forms of hypothermia intervention and prevention. Articles with only their abstract in the databases and research focusing on laboratory animals were excluded. After this search, 12 articles recommending the following as hypothermia prevention or intervention measures were found: control of room temperature, use of thermal blanket with heated air, removal of wet clothes, infusion or irrigation with warm fluids, and pre-heating the patient with a thermal blanket during transportation to the surgical room.
Key-words: Hypothermia/ Perioperative care/ Surgical.
