Abstract
The information consumption made from nursing journals in the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas (year 2004). Comparison years 2002-2004

Aims: to know about of science information consumption patterns among nurses in the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas during 2004. To compare 2004 data series to those ones got in 2002.
Methods: Bibliometric Descriptive Study about of the information consumption made in a sample of nursing magazines in the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas during 2004.
Findigns: an amount of 18539 references were obtained from 33 sources during 2004. 3264 of them were related to different nursing magazines and 62.35% (2035), from the said ones, came from nursing magazines in the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas. 117 nursing magazines were quoted from the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas, most of them were Spanish (47.01%) and Brasilian (32.48%). Argentina and Chile, followed by Mexico and Colombia, are the countries which have the highest percentage of foreign titles quoted. Spain, which has a high rate of self-consumption, as well as Brazil, is the least using foreign production coming from the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas. The nursing magazines reference average consumption per article in the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas was 1.59% references/article, bearing in mind the magazines nationality. As the most aforementioned magazine, all the countries show a national magazine, except to Argentina, which one is from Spain. When the 2004 and 2005 variables of the distribution were compared, the Wilcoxon test did not indicate any significant differences, except for the distribution of quotations, in accordance with the index of aforementioned magazines (Z=3.167; p=0.002).
Conclusion: the increase of new resources in the network and also the easiness to get the whole information text, have made possible that the quotation of scientific production in the Latin-American scientific space goes much consolidated. The result is a much heterogeneous model of consumption. On the other hand, it still exist an under-quotation of newspapers. In the future, it is expected an increased in the number of quotations into the electronic newspapers and in the nursing magazines from the Spanish and Portuguese linguistic areas, as well. These changes will be possible thanks to the Information Technologies.
