Abstract

Cancer constitutes an important problem of public health. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy of the female sex. In Europe it is estimated that 1/11 women will develop this disease. Upper limb lymphedema produced by breast cancer treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy evolves with an increase in volume that interferes with limb functionality. These patients must be trained in healthcare habits which may lead to a good hygiene; this may help them to prevent eventual development of lymphedema. Manual lymphatic drainage is the most effective technique in physiotherapy treatment of secondary lymphedema of breast cancer, and best results are achieved when it is combined with others such pneumatic compression, compression bandage or exercises.
Key-words: Breast cancer/ Lymphedema/ Physiotherapy.
