Abstract (Variables associated to the postpartum depression risk in women who have given birth in Teruel according to Edinburgh scale)

Objective. Estimate the risk of suffering from PPD in Teruel, identifying related variables, and studying the usefulness of two PPD-screening questions. Materials and methods. In this observational and descriptive study was used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and two additional screening questions were added via a convenience sampling, conducted by the eleven midwives, including biopsychosocial variables. Results. Of 98 postnatal participants, 10.2% scored 12 or more in the EPDS, showing a noteworthy risk of suffering from PPD. Those variables which were significantly associated with a PPD risk were the number of abortions, the days of hospitalization, the annual family income, the marital status, the type of and difficulties with breastfeeding, and the lack of support from family and romantic partner. The two supplementary screening questions turned out to be useful for its use before EPDS. Conclusions. The detection of biopsychosocial variables associated with PPD risk and the application of a double tool -screening questions and EPDS- included in a necessary protocol, allow an early detection and treatment of PPD.
